Character Lifting Box

This is an animation that I did of my character lifting up a heavy box. I also did some thumbnail sketches of the character lifting a rock and box in different angles and at different points. I did a rough sketched out version of the box lift before doing a spacing chart and proceeding to do the complete and clearer version box lift to make it better.

for the start of it, I did some thumbnail sketches to help improve the sketching abilities of my character lifting a box in various angles and position. I also did it with a rock as well. This greatly helps me decide what type of lift I want to do. it allowed me to indicate how and what lift should be done for improving my skills learning this animation technique. The sketches were relatively well done and I quite liked them. Originally I planned to just do the rock lift as I originally thought it would be best and I could do a little secondary action of my character repositioning the rock in her arms, but I ended up deciding to do the box lift as I thought it’ll be simpler but allows for differing approaches for the box do to its shape and I can use the lift to gauge the boxes content. The thumbnails helped me gauge this. I do think that I could of down more thumbnails and object to extend my ideas.

I started to do a rough sketch of the box lift drawing on to this is to get a feeling of how the box lift is going to be and how I wanted to approach it. I did a little anticipation fo the character shifting the position when lifting the box before the actual lift and also did a little shuffling of the feet when lifting the box to show signs of struggling. The animation here gives me a rough idea on what I want to do and helps me gauge out on how I’m going to space out the final complete animation on a spacing chart. Even though this isn’t meant to be perfect or exact to what I want I am going to change up animation. I think that I would like to have the character thinking before going to grab the box. I also think that I could add some anticipation on the grab of her pulling her arm back before grabbing the box.

I’ve done I more complete form for the animation of my character picking up a box. In this animation, it shows squash and stretch as well as I do a bit of timing using a spacing chart. This animation in its current state is pretty good as the animation is pretty smooth and the drawing is relatively solid with only A few mishaps here and there. The animation is pretty good as it also shows the weight of the box from the time and effort put in. In the animation, the character slows it down in speed the further the box goes up to show the struggle and reduce in momentum. I do think at this point I need to add some anticipation at the beginning and it would also look better if I added expressions to the face of the character. The character at the end of the animation also inflates a bit before ending.

After getting the box lift down I decided on adding some anticipation into it. The anticipation isn’t much. It is 12 frames of the character shifting positions and getting ready for lifting the box. If I was going to make the anticipation better I would probably add more frames and make the character move around a bit more before lifting up the box.

This is the final stage that I’ve managed to do.  I’ve displayed a good amount of timing, squash and stretch, anticipation, secondary action and a bit of arc in the motion of the character picking up the box. One big animation technique that I could input to improve this animation to improve it a lot would have been exaggeration using facial expressions and more emphasis on the initial pull. All in all, though I think that I quite successfully I didn’t manage to complete everything I planned for it I think I executed what I’ve done quite well.
