Character design and development

The theme was a Circus and the ideation behind my character is that I wanted the character to be an aerial silks acrobat, so I got reference images and start designing a character based of the reference I was using. Here are some of the reference that I used:

I designed the character all on paper. The start fo my character design was that I used measuring techniques combined with basic shapes to start developing her form. I then proceeded to create an outline of the character and then proceeded to finish off here by adding facial features and details to the character. I then proceed to draw some little extra drawings of her in the crossed leg position facing different directions to get a feel for drawing the character. I could have done better in this part of the process as I could have been more accurate and better with my designs if I measured them out all the same when constructing them. lucky though I manage to maintain relatively the same proportion and didn’t veer off too from the planned design.

The next thing that I did was draw different facial of the character in different directions. I drew 12 different facial expressions of the character facing different directions and display a different range of emotions. I’m quite fond of the different facial expression that I’ve managed to draw and I think that I’ve managed to display I variety of emotion that the character might face. I do believe that I could develop more angles of the face of the character to help expression more angles better. I also think that the side angle shouting expression could have been better drawn and displayed more emotion in the eyebrows and eyes. I could have also drawn the faces larger so it was easier to capture the expressions. I think this that the expression help displays the personality and range of the character.

for the next part of developing the character, I proceeded to draw some thumbnails related to the character. the thumbnails of the character that I drew are quick little sketches related to the character perform various ariel silk techniques. I think that the thumbnails capture the character well and display the range of motion the character can perform using aerial silks and capture what the character does. I do think that on some of the thumbnail sketches that I drew I could have drawn them bigger so that they were easier to identify that they were the character and I could have done this by planning out the thumbnails using guidelines.

For the next part of designing the character was I drew a turn around of the character. For this, I used guidelines and measuring technique to draw the character out and make sure that the character is consistent in proportion and size. I drew 4 different angles of the character. I drew front, side, back and 3/4 angle view of the character. I did this by using the 7 head measure method and 2 lines to represent the top and bottom of the character. I then constructed the character using basic shapes and finalised the details. after that, I coloured in the front angle view of the character. the character represented the basic hue of the character and was done entirely using different colouring pencils. I think for this section it was drawn out well for all except the side view. I think that the face on the side view was a little wonky and could use some improvements as the chin is drawn incorrectly and makes the face seem a little flat. Other than that the character has been measured accurately and is proportion fitting to each other and has a nice reddish colour scheme to it.

I think that overall the character design had a lot of sizing issue earlier on in stages and that I should of practice more drawing side angles as it is pretty obvious that the characters design diminishes in the side angles. I could have done a lot better now overall if I was to do it all over again, but all in all the character facial expression were good and design of the character comes off really well and fits in with the description of the character I wanted.
